Don't Think is about the frustration of trying to fall asleep and running, without effect, through all the banal, useless advice given to insomniacs—including “don’t think.” It’s about the irony of insomnia when your life is boring—something we might all relate to after the last 2 years. It’s a dark song, but somehow it also sounds like a song for the beach, with its layered acoustic and electric guitar, handclaps and guiro.
The song came to Karen, almost in its entirety, during a sleepless night. She even pictured the video (a play on relaxation videos—available now on Youtube) and the cover art above. This is the third single from our forthcoming album, Currents, available May 28th, 2022.
lyrics
Picture yourself on a beach in the sun
In a body that means nothing to anyone
Hands so smooth that the sand slips right through
You can't hold on even if you wanted to
Every petty thought on a paper airplane
A military airshow but nobody came
A military breathing exercise in your bed
But an army couldn't empty out your head
Don't think, don't think
If you think about swimming you'll sink
And if you think about living, you'll die
All you have to do is close your eyes
Not falling in love, not chasing the light
Just the gears and the grind of your boring old life
Still you sweat in your sheets just like Springsteen said
It's a freight train running through the middle of your head
Don't think, don't think
If you think about swimming you'll sink
And if you think about living, you'll die
All you have to do is close your eyes
Don't think, don't think
It's the easiest fucking thing
Like goddamn! Wasn't I born sleeping?
When did it get so hard to do?
Can't go back if I wanted to
